A Great Idea

Remember the days of the handy man?  You could hire him to do the little things around the house and yard.  No one really has the extra change for such things these days.

AARP has a great idea on how we can all become handy men, and I am impressed.  There are so many things we can do for each other that maybe we just don’t think about.

They are fostering, promoting, encouraging volunteerism.

Nothing new in volunteerism.  It is rampant in America.  Did you know that it is unique to North America?  No other countries have as much, nor are they as dependant upon volunteers.

So what’s so new?

AARP is  offering ideas, and assistance in how we can help our neighbors in ways we may not have thought of.

For example:

They have a Home Safety Check list you could go through with the elderly widow across the street (after you have checked your home!).

Did it ever occur that their may be a large chair that, while it looks nice with the Living Room decor is right in the way if she had to quickly escape from the house.  But, it is too heavy for her to move.

You could help!

And while you’re there, set her hot water heater to 120 degrees.  It will lessen the chances of her scalding herself and will save energy.

Simple.  Free.  It will make you feel good!

They are calling it “Create The Good”.  Here’s what they say:

“AARP can show you many ways to make a difference for people in your community. You can search for ways to create the good in your community, and you can post opportunities, as well. Some ideas take an hour or less. And, when you join the Create The Good network, we will keep in touch and email you new ideas and opportunities.”

Create the Good is about helping others – whether you have 5 minutes or 5 hours.  Take a look at this website and see what it is all about.

And even if you haven’t the time to assist others, the suggestions are great to apply to your own life.
